I'll bite. Is it really true that some FrOObs run around begging for money and items from established players? What the hell is up with that? AO is a game, right? And the point is to make your way up the food chain with your own work. Or am I missing something? I'd no more consider harassing another player for money than I would claiming someone's RL work for my own.

It is true some PLAYERS run around begging for money and items from established players. The introduction of free accounts has drastically increased the number of players, not all of whom would have shown interest in the game otherwise so dont all have the same philosophy as you on how you should play the game. It is because of the type of person they are not the type of account they have.

Best way to deal with it is to teach them to fish so they don't have to run around asking for food all the time.

That's kind of embarassing. My character is broke, but at least he has his pride. And hanging lanterns in his Newland City apartment. Just for kicks, Fellow Froobs, what game obstacles have y'all run into because of your "freeloader" status. It's tough enough to play a nuetral in the game, are their things that make it hard to be a Froob? (And what happens when we become vets? Do whe call ourselves Frets?)

This cred begging isn't just done by fr00bs... I have been hastled by ppl with paying accounts too (I know because I targeted them & hit 'T' & they had alien kills!).

I came into this game as a fr00b & certainly would not have played this if it wasn't for that fact.
I always said that once I payed to buy a game then that should be it, no more payments (apart from upgrades or expansions).
But here I am, I got hooked in about a month & now have been playing for about 8 or 9 months & have a yearly payed account (it actualy saves you half the monthly cost).

So in short, yes, ppl do beg for cash but it's not just a fr00b thing.
When someone begs to me I can tell if they are new & lost or just stupid & greedy...
Stupid & greedy get nothing, new & lost get not cash but about 1-2mill worth of proffesion specific nanos & imps & a 1hr long lecture about how to make money! lol.
I have actualy had ppl come back to me some time later & thank me for it & prove (by putting it in a trade window but not hitting accept) how much money they now have, & offering to give me the cash back that I gave theml. I usualy tell them to do the same for someone else with it... :D

Snakebite: That's a nice (and very generous) approach on your part. Where do you hang out?

[You should post the lecture on money-making. I've seen some guides/posts on-line, but they're very focused on high-level players and trade skill stuff. Not too helpful to fr00bs.]

One of the only fr00b issues I've encountered is that when I ran up to an experienced player last night to ask a question, he/she immediately jumped up and ran away. Maybe it was just coincidence, but I couldn't help but wonder if he was afraid I was going to beg for stuff.

Otherwise, I've found players to be very nice -- giving me heals and buffs without even being asked (I don't ask for anything in-game; probably to a fault).

Oh, I did have one guy ask to buy my solar adventurer pistols off me for $1000. I assume he thought he could upgrade them. I was still using them, so I said no, and he was a pest about it, asking me several times and telling me what a great deal it was. Then he asks to buy my newbie-light. Kinda weird.

Aren't those items he wanted to buy NODROP???

Anyway, the lecture I give tends to change drasticaly everytime I give it, but it basicaly boils down to:
"do missions, loot everything that isn't nailed down, sell loot..."
Ok, that's a little simplistic but it is the base, I have made millions & millions in doing just that, filling up most of my inv with backpacks & looting everything I see...

All you do after that is watch out for certain items, Grid Armor Disks (HUGE prices for these), Concrete Cushions (lower the better, a pair of lvl10s sell for 300k on RK2), Omni Med-Suit parts (Full set sells for about 100k to clanners on RK2), Nano Tech Armor (sells well to the terminals)... Stuff like that.

As for the bloke that ran away from you, when you get to a higher lvl you tend to be involved in a lot more stuff that's going on, it's entirely possible that he didn't have a clue you were there cos he had several backpack windows open, was reading 2 different chat channels (on different windows), was having a conversation with his gf (who decided that now was a good time to ask him what he wanted for dinner & who was going to the shop to get the veggi special that she wanted...) & had just realised that one of the critical buffs that would let him get on the latest uber item he had found/purchaced was about to run out in 5 mins & he needed to get to Borialis to pick up said item from his mate that had just logged on...

*breathes for a while...*

Anyway, he probably didn't see you...

Somehow I do think that most of these "fr00bs" begging for money are secondary (free classic) accounts of paying customers who are too lazy to transfer their money or just behave like parasites everywhere. I had even lower level players with openly visible SL items asking me for cash ... that's where I'm short before getting furious :P Anyway, begging anywhere can get you the "beggar"-branding and tons of ignores very soon, so don't do it.

About asking high(er) level players and they just doing nothing/jumping off/not reacting it can have many reasons. Mostly it's because they are either afk, busy with some other stuff (e.g. what Snakebite said: spammed with windows, multiple chats and so on) or have multiple characters logged in at the same time and use their other chars as backup. Just find another high(er) level players and bug them with your questions, there are enough of them around :D

And yes, the Solar Powered guns are all nodrop, same for the Light Bar. If they want one, they should make a new char and get the stuff themself :P

Begging is the worst thing that came with fr00bs. You would be surprised with the amount of complains I see in org chat about it.

Some are nice beggers "Can you help me with some credits to buy a new <insert item here>." Others are very annoying:"Creds plz."

One of the things we have to watch in game is our reputation and this, money can't buy.

As of how to make money you guys could make a thread here with the new methods of making money. The ones in the official forums are outdated.

And I'm usually rude with fr00b tells also, because 99% of them are to ask for money. If you try to give an advice, they just get upset and don't answer or call you greedy.

Begging like that is kind of crass, if you ask me. Do your own work!
