You might want to add his dialogue options to the guide because if you get too snarky and rude with the guy he'll keep the letter and stop your mission for your garden key dead with no way to retry the dialogue options with him like some of the other NPCs. It doesn't even say that he did so or that you have to start over, it's just.. dead.
I hadn't done the mission in a few years and had it happen today while using the AOU guide since it usually has sensitive dialogue options laid out.

Been ages since I did that quest, but I think in case Ardent Pie Shere keeps the Letter, you have to speak with previous NPC again. Or was that first NPC (and in that case you'll have to do whole quest line again)?

Sad to hear that you got into that dead end of the quest. Usually you have to delete the mission and start from zero ... like Trgeorge already mentioned.
We'll have a look at the quest and insert the hint at a fitting point.
In general you may want to kiss the Unredeemed a... bottoms, lick their feet and then start talking with them in a way only slaves would talk with their masters... even later this is basicly the way to go.

You can always look forward to the Adonis Sanctuary quest I guess... There, you get to have a trashtalking competition with a demon.
