How long can you wait for the new engine?

Can't wait, I quit already.

The Engine

Post by Ukblizzard » Wed Sep 15, 2010 4:19 pm

So very often, there are posts made in the AO forums and fansite forums complaining - asking questions - ranting about quitting because the new Engine isn't here yet.

Quite frankly, even though I really like shinies and the new things we have had sneak peeks on so far - I feel quite ok waiting until it really is ready. I just wondered how many readers of AOU share my opinion.. or are in the OMG still not done I /quit camp.

There was a mention of when we might be able to expect the Engine further to the gathering in Oslo at the AO-FC offices. Will it be soon enough for you?

Well, looks like I voted with the majority.

I don't care when it arrives, so long as it doesn't screw up my favourate game!

I guess we will hear from it again around the 10th anniversary...
...at least this would be good marketing news.

That's what I said on the AO Forums a bit ago. Then I was flamed for prophesying doom.

Excellent answer, I think the same way. I don't care when it comes out, as long as don't mess the game in so many ways, like extraordinary PC requirements, slow playing, not having any option to run it low quality to preserve the speed, etc.

Yes, I'm worried about the system requirements, it could force out a lot of players who have lower end computers.
My computer is fairly fast (in so much as it's now 2 years old), I've played AO now for nearly 6 years, my old computer would dual log 3 instances at a push, my new one will run 6, but I know for certain that my old computer would be pushed to run the upper end games if at all...

Although I voted the Christmas option I am willing to wait till the 10th AO year anniversary to start composing the "rant" :)

AO deserves a new graphical engine... it is a very good game and it doesn't deserve an obsolete graphic... (some will say I am an egoist here  )

I do not think it will run slower on low end computers. Means already stated that quite the oppsite is the fact. And from a hobby programmiers view, I can understand that statement. Old AO is not using Shaders at all or very little only and relies on particle effects which are using the cpu very heavy.
This will dramatically change and most load will sit on the gpu then.
So with at least a decent video card which supports dx9 well I think everyone will be fine.
If you are still on win9x, I think it is time for an upgrade anyway :D.
regards

Yes, but my point is that many people can't afford that upgrade...

Stop playing AO for a month or two and you've saved enough money to buy a card which should more than cover what AO needs. :p

My understanding is that as long as your card supports DX9, it'll run. And really.. Which cards don't?

Yes, but cards and the slots they use move on...
The two reasons I went out and spent ?é?ú850 on a new computer was that I happened to have the money to burn at the time and that I simply couldn't upgrade my old computer because all the new stuff used different slots!

For some people, a complete new computer will be the only option!

I have to correct you... a new videoboard is good... but do not forget the RAM memory... I had 1 giga on my old PC and AO played ok... but on the new PC with 4 giga RAM... (and ~1 GIGA vram) AO flies....
