Bot newb please help

AO is the main topic, but you can also talk about things like the latest console game you've played, web comics, movies, music, etc. as they pertain to your AO experience.

Bot newb please help

Post by neoerebus » Sat Feb 03, 2007 2:57 am

I am starting an org on RK2 and we will need a bot. I have read as much as I could find about bots and it seems to me that the ign bot might be my best bet. I read the manuel for it. I however need to ask a few newb questions. It says i need to tell it to log on with one of my characters. Does this mean that I should get a froob account to stick it on? or does it need to be on my main account? Does it run another version of AO? my computer isn't that good and running 2 versions at once will be VERY taxing on my system. I have an old clunker that it can go on if need be. I just REALLY have no idea what I am doing lol and since the org will be run by me and my wife I figured we should be the ones to support the bot also. Any info would be appreciated, and if you know of anything that might help me beyond what I have asked, due to personal xp etc then please feel free to post it :)

Thank you

First question: Yes, you do need to hijack one of your characters. From what account (paid, fr00b) doesn't matter.

Second question: The bot will only connect to the the chatserver of the game. This is a seperate server, that handles all the chat only. Since your bot won't appear "ingame", but only as chatclient, you can even run the bot from your main account, while you are playing the game with another character from the same account. Multiple logins are limited to one connection of game logins, not connections to the chatserver.

The bot itself is usually based on PHP, which means it comes with PHP-executables. Running this with a bot does take some ressources. You can run it on the same system you play on, although depending on how much your bot will be used then, it would be wiser to run it on a seperate computer. If you got some old rig, use it. It doesn't take much ressources, however it might influence all your other applications noticable if on the same system (especially if you are running Windows that is :P)
