First and last names for characters

I have seen in the game characters with extended names, including first name, "nickname in quotes", and last name, such as "Michael 'Mick the Shark' Shukovsky". Yet I am stuck with 12 characters or less, no symbols, no punctuation, no spaces. How did these people get such "fancy" names? Are they ARKs? GMs? Is this something only non-Fr00bs can get? What's the story?

Froobs can do it

There is twos ways to get names, the name giving machine in the training areas of the backyard or /tell name first Gavin Last Argo or something like that.

The only option open to any new character at the moment is to use the machine in the backyards. The other way (/name first "Fixthis" and /name last "Bug") is busted big time, as outlined in gory detail here: Clicky.

Also, you can keep using the machine until you find a name you like.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. Khiros, that link is to a thread about the character database being busted, am I missing something? Is that the right thread, maybe I just haven't read far enough through it?

No, there are keyboard commands to add a 'first' and 'last' name to your character... I forget what they are at the moment (they will be something like /add firstname ***** /add lastname *****), Petition it, an ARK will tell you...

It takes 24hrs to get it actualy added, because the names are vetted by ARK first...
