Direct3D is a part of DirectX (3D graphics). DirectX also contains sound- and various other game related APIs.

OpenGL is something completely different to Direct3D. To the degree that most applications are written to run on one or the other. As far as I know, the same holds true for AO. It's purely a DirectX/Direct3D application.

Well, if you're thinking of getting the Shadowlands expansion, it would be an unwise thing to spend too much IP in TL5 anyways. Because the TL6 shadowlevels would be very tight on IP if you don't have about a million IP or so spare at level 200.
