Demoder wrote:If I search for "Anarchy Online Universe" on google, AO-U pops up as hit #4 - with an invalid (old site style URI) article.
If I search for some AOU guide on google, AOU doesn't show up anywhere near the top.
I suspect this is because we don't use search-engine-friendly URLs.
No, it's not because of the URLs. The missing of AOU on google (or other search engines) is my mistake. The "Bots" (crawler) group that the forum assigns those to automatically had no read permissions on the site (they had none set, which reverts to no).
Demoder wrote: If changing the URLs are too much hassle (it probably is), Khuri might want to look into using the google web tools (and similar tools for other search engines) to instruct the engines which parameters are important; Such as saying that the parameters "id", "mid", and "pid" should be used to identify a page.
The parameter settings in the google webmaster tools is new (well, been a while i looked on them last), i set things accordingly for the page.
Also i've improved the default sitemap-generation tool i use for the cms by default to work better with the website and it's special modules. It catches all default pages now.
http://www.ao-universe.com/sitemap.xml
This should help us get the page back on top for google searches as soon as it gets crawled again.
Seeing as the generation takes place in less then a 10th of a second, i'll maybe upgrade it soon to index the whole forum as well.
...
As for the long URIs and the "site"-variable, this one has indeed no effect at all. It's simply a search engine quirk, having keywords in the URL can affect search results positive. So it more or less "emulates" the rewrite stuff other websites do using virtual folders. I wonder why no one does that, because it does work (got enough websites to show ;))... but a mod rewrite function is on my long to-do list as nice alternative for servers that support it.
The URI-encoding is to avoid issues. Also a space is a +, not a -. 99% of my normal clients give a damn about what's in the URL bar of their browser, as long as it looks good on the search engine results.
But i am open for suggestions regarding this site. It's a nice place to try out tweaking things, as you and i have already discussed :)
Silvana wrote:Weird, if you're not on a forum page, it shows "Search Forum..." in that box, which makes it a little more obvious what it is for, but any forum pages, it just says "Search..." If it could be changed to show the forum part always, that would go a long way.
Yes... well, the CMS has the "search forum"-string in it's language file, the forum just has "search".
I'll have to adjust that.
Will also add the "combine forum/guides/whole website into one big search"-request to the to-do list. That should be possible.

The BIG Update

The BIG Update

Silence i had, and now I've got a huge update for the website.

Mobile Website
we can haz mobile website! http://www.ao-universe.com/mobile/
The normal website will show an info box at the top (next to the leets) if a mobile device is detected. There's also a link on the normal menu (bottom of About AOU).

Cross-site search
The search box on top right now searches the forum, the knowledge db and the articles.
You will be presented a list to choose which result list you'd like to see.

Knowlegde Section
Optimized layout! On category screen, now all boxes align properly no matter how long the list.
Full lists! You pick a category, you get the category. But you also can open up all of it's subcategories at once! Either by opening them all by hand or by hitting the "All categories"-link on top right. Check here: http://www.ao-universe.com/index.php?id=14&mid=9
More Administration! All incomplete guides now show up in the list again, marked with a big red X in front of the name.

More SEO
Google has indexed our new sitemap. We're back!
But, search results might look not too nice because of repeating descriptions and keywords.
But Fear not! All normal pages got proper descriptions added now, and all "dynamically generated" sites like guides and articles will scan their content give the short description of the article as meta data and produce a gibberish keyword list based on the content.
Effects should be visible on search engines in a few days hopefully.

Other stuff
- Classic Guides list not aligning properly with addition of "Daily Missions" section
- News headers are not processing - marks.
- Deleting banners via the CMS does not work.
- "Off-site Link" option when posting (CMS) does not function properly, putting only the address, and not the inputted text.
- Page title isn't consistent across the site. Sometimes the tag line shows, other times just the address.
- Have articles listed in proper date order instead of alphabetical (separate submitted on/last updated dates if necessary)
- List= function not working for posts.
All fixed, improved, corrected!

As a side note, it has been brought up that guides aren't giving their proper location in the above listing. The shoulderpads quest seems to be the one brought up, though I'm having trouble finding it at all without searching, so not sure what's going on there heh.

Awesome on the rest :)

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the AOU Banners are gone, I asked someone to add one to their website and when he couldn't find them I tried looking myself, and they are not there from the "About Us" page which linked to them.

Any way to at least have a temporary thread at our forums with the images meanwhile? (I don't have the images)

I like the changes to the knowledge section, but the section titles look a bit funny now. If we could add back in a little more of the division between them and make the titles not almost overlapping the first link? I actually think I might do some graphics for each one, even if it's just a text graphic.

people are lft for these things, and if you search aouni with those terms, you willl not get to whataver quest section they are talking about.

I'll leave a note about this on the Budabot-Forum.
If you have any other chatbots that might be interested in this feature, let them know.

Searching for Hollow Island you got following 42 search results. This search were spot on and I still got a lot of irrelevant results.

This was also brought up by a user as well.

Needs the functionality of putting searches in quotes so that exact matches can be found. Right now it is returning results that have one or more of the search terms in them; so in that case anything with hollow or island will be returned. Considering how often island gets used in the guides for various reasons, 42 isn't a surprise. Hopefully we can put in a more refined search.

Ok, I would think if someone searched with theses words:

Collar Casero

That only a guide which includes both words would come up.

In that search, a SL guide comes up, related only to the word Collar, same with Foremans guide and the Twinking Treatment guide.

The correct results were The Crypt of Home and Comprehensive Shade guides.

So, 2 out of 5 were correct.

Imagine when other words are uses, which separately could show a total of a dozen results.

The search code should take the words and take it as Collar+Casero so that a search looks for both words in a single guide and not apart.

I'm not a coder, and I got no idea how difficult this is, but I'm just saying, as a user the current results, may frustrate me.
