Arid Rift NPC chats

Post by Windguaerd » Mon Mar 09, 2009 1:31 am

Chat with Hock:

Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Can't you see I'm busy?
Noticiero: Your commander sent me. I'm here to find out what's going on and why you haven't been in touch.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Truth of the matter is, we haven't been able to generate the intel the commander wants. The Kyr'Ozch are excessively aggressive here... We can't get anything done until we get a break from them.
Speaking of, I can't stand here and chat with you, or I'll definitely not get the commander what he wants.
Noticiero: Wait! I have to return with some sort of information, at least!
He doesn't say anything for a couple of seconds, then:
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Look, further in this canyon there are some sort of cocoons. They burp out a new alien larva every few seconds and if we destroy it, another one is generated not long after.
We've no idea how it works, and I don't give a flying turd, really. But, as long as they're active, they're blocking our communication system and we're unable to get the transmission we need.

Even if the situation was critical enough to justify reinforcements, which by the way it's not, we couldn't call in for backup because of the jamming signals they transmit.

So if you don't want to go back to the commander with your tail between your legs, you have two choices. One, you do what you can to help the situation. Two, stop talking so I can get my job done faster. Understand?

Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: What do you want? Be quick about it.
Noticiero: I took out some cocoons.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Ah it's you... I noticed, so I started the transmission immediately.
A few more minutes and it'll be done.
He nods towards the portable terminal.
Noticiero: Who is sending the transmission?
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: The details are classified, and needless to say, people like you don't have access to this information. But it's no secret that our operator in Neretva Canyons has discovered certain units with incredibly advanced technology, which the Company is interested in. They're unable to retrieve a unit because of the circumstances, so our team was sent out to diagnose the tech, but instead we've been stuck here holding the numbers of these aliens down.
Noticiero: What circumstances?
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Problem is these units are running some sort of self-destruct program preventing us from examining their equipment.
Look... I appreciate what you did, but I can't talk about this and I have a job to do. If you want to return to the commander, be my guest. You can tell him that we're close to receive the first results. He'll know what it means.
Noticiero: Can I help you find one of these units?
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: You're welcome to try all you want, but I promise that you won't find squat until we can stop them from self-destructing. It's been impossible to salvage any usable equipment off of them because of their death rattle. It's as if they don't want us to get hold of whatever tech they're using.
Noticiero: Ok. So how do we stop them from blowing themselves up?
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: There are theories... the details are confidential. We have a prototype design ready, but to build the device we hope to make use of the alien crystals in this area. That's why I need a relief from the jam we're in...
Suddenly, a loud beep and several whirring noises coming from the technical equipment interrupts the Unicorn, as it starts printing out a long list.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Well, speak of the devil...
Noticiero: Does that list tell you how to build the device you mentioned?
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Correct... it does.
He spends a few moments looking through the information that the machine spat out.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Right... This is worth a try.
He scans your body for a moment.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Do you want to help me get some of these things?
Noticiero: Sure, I'll do it.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Here, take this crystal cutter. I built it earlier, with the purpose of taking a sample of crystals with a radiation that deviate from the norm. It's been set with the values of a regular crystal, so it recognizes corrupted ones. As far as I know, there are four stages of corruption on the crystals in Arid Rift.
Find four samples of these and then come back to me. I've uploaded the details into your NCU. Good luck.!
Noticiero: Where can I find the crystals?
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: You'll find the crystals in the area south of the main camp. You know, where you met Commander Ryker?
These canyons are one damn maze though, so be careful... I wouldn't recommend getting lost.

Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: I don't exactly have time to talk!
Noticiero: Here... I have the crystal samples you wanted.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Sounds promising. Let's have a look. I'll need the tool back too.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: This looks very promising. With these crystals I think I can finish a device based on the data I received. You've helped out and I owe you my thanks, citizen. I'll make sure the Commander hears about what you've done.
Noticiero: I'll return to your commander and give him a status update, then.
Unicorn Demolitionist Hock: Sounds like an idea, pal. Now, I have things to do, my eyes only. Tell him I'll deliver when it's ready. Good luck out there.

Unicorn Commander Ryker: State your business, civilian! This is no place for loitering!
Noticiero: I found your men. They're relatively ok.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: So you found them, huh? We knew they weren't dead since they haven't reclaimed, and they know better than to call in reinforcements when it's not needed, but they could have sent a friggin' runner to give a status report. I'll make a note about it on their record. This ain't the training grounds.

What kind of situation were they in?
Noticiero: They've been pinned down by alien cocoons that delayed their progress, but Hock said he's close to seeing results and that he'll deliver when ready.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: Right, those cocoons are one of the many things that have us stumped. Not because we can't handle them, but they produce aliens that are different from what we've become used to in the course of these last few years.
Your help is appreciated. That's all you'll get from me.
Noticiero: Thanks, I guess. So what now?
Unicorn Commander Ryker: My, my... Aren't you an eager one. But hell... I won't stop you. There's plenty to go around for everyone in this warped place.

I got reports of an alien that seems to have mutated or morphed into a different "stage" a while ago, so I sent out a unit of OT AF Soldiers to take care of it. I haven't heard from them since... The fledglings must have deserted! Bedamed cowards should have stayed in Omni-1!
I know you have gotten to know your way around here so I want you to go to where it was last seen.

Don't return without a status report and be sure to bring back any information you can find about the deserters!
I'll wait for Hock to finish up.

Vibrations emerge from the tower structure. The Unicorn Commander frowns at you.
Noticiero: Do you want an extra hand fighting the aliens?
With a head movement that you can't quite determine is contempt or just tactical observation, the Unicorn officer checks you out for a moment before speaking.
Unicorn Commander Labbe: And what makes you think I may have any use of you?
Noticiero: Well, it seems you guys need all the help you can get.
Unicorn Commander Labbe: Let's get one thing straight. The Unicorn Company does not need your help or anyone else's for that matter. We won't stop people who begs us to let them run errands for us, but there is a big difference between that and needing your help. Got it?

Unicorn Commander Ryker: I don't have time for baby-sitting. You should head back the way you came before you get anyone into trouble. Including yourself!
Noticiero: Your 'deserters' were all dead! I followed the trail of wasted bodies to their bane, some kind of evolved alien.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: Yet you come back alive?
Commander Ryker does not reply with his usual brusque comeback, instead he turns to his COM link.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: Code yellow, we have a class two Kyr'Ozch... I repeat, a class two Kyr'Ozch. Immediate request for backup--
Noticiero: I killed the alien.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: Cancel that order.
He turns off the COM link and turns slowly towards you.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: Impressive... Did you do it alone or with a group?
Noticiero: I handled it alone.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: Doesn't surprise me at all. Rabble like your kind, always thinking you can handle things alone.
Noticiero: So, what now?
Unicorn Commander Ryker: As a matter of fact, I just got a tool delivered from Hock; he's damn fast that man.
We've been working to find a way to salvage tech from kamikaze units. They've had us baffled for some time, but this tool is supposed to stop them from self-destructing.
Finally we can collect components of their technology.
Noticiero: What do you want me to do?
Unicorn Commander Ryker: I'd like you to take this interrupter tool and head out to the canyons in search for kamikaze dusters. Destroy a good bunch of them. Rip them open and tear out any mechanical parts you can find. I'll be here, waiting.
Remember to use the interrupter tool on the Kamikaze Dusters before you kill them, or they will self-destruct!

Unicorn Commander Ryker: State your business, civilian! This is no place for loitering!
Noticiero: Well... I managed to dust some dusters and haul back some of their gear.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: Good job. Let's see what you got. Give me the interrupter tool back too.
Unicorn Commander Ryker: These look in good enough shape to dismantle for further use. Good job.
Noticiero: So... what now?
Unicorn Commander Ryker: What you do now on is up to you. I won't stop you from hanging around, nor to enter the canyons, but don't expect us to bail you out if you find yourself in a pinch.
There is no use in you clinging to me like a kid with separation anxiety, however.
Go talk to the researchers. They're here to investigate the occurrence of Xan structures, I'm sure they have use for those fresh legs of yours.

Professor Morgan Parser: Welcome to Arid Rift! I can't recall to have ever met you before... I suppose you are the new demographer. I'm Morgan Parser, anthropologist. Have you been treated to the mandatory tour yet?
Noticiero: I'm Noticiero... You must be mistaking me for someone else.
Parser's eyes narrow which makes him look highly suspicious.
Professor Morgan Parser: What are you doing here then? You do look like you're fully clad for a fight... freelancer?
Noticiero: I suppose... Can you give me the mandatory tour?
Professor Morgan Parser: This is an official OT operation. To be honest I don't have time nor interest to share my knowledge with a stranger. And why aren't you wearing a goddamn identity tag!
Noticiero: I bothered coming all the way here! I want to learn more about this operation.
His features soften.
Professor Morgan Parser: You know what... You seem annoyingly persistent, I like that. We have found ruins and there's reason to believe they're left by the ancient Xan.

I'm interested in a few of these ruins, specifically in the decor and whether there is any trace of unpolluted notum in the ground.
If you want to know more, take this device and use it in the vicinity of these ruins, then present me with an oral report.
Noticiero: A magnifying glass... Who uses those these days?
Professor Morgan Parser: It's perfectly adequate for the task you've received... Besides, i don't trust just anyone with my more valuable equipment.

Professor Morgan Parser: Noticiero, tell me what you found.
Noticiero: I visited all of the major ruins.
His bright eyes shines with excitement.
Professor Morgan Parser: Please Noticiero, describe what you found!
Noticiero: It's like nothing I've ever seen on Rubi-Ka before...
You tell him about the magnificent structures you recognize from Shadowlands.
Professor Morgan Parser: Truly remarkable, they really are from the Xan era! There is a lot of what could be called compelling circumstantial evidence, things like anecdotes provided by the Yuttocra and Ergo down to historical and cultural research, but we're desperatley missing an important fraction of the history after the cataclysm.
This needs to be documented! I'll go there myself...
He mumbles quietly to himself.
Professor Morgan Parser: I can already see my name on the cover of the history books... Give me my magnifying glass back, please!
He studies the ancient tool for a few seconds, a smile playing on his lips. He looks at you.
Professor Morgan Parser: Would you do something else for me? You've shown you're competent...
Noticiero: Sure thing professor, brief me.
Professor Morgan Parser: I just got reports of an unknown type of aliens. Their carapaces seem to be very brittle, meaning there's a good chance we can penetrate their shells.

I need at least four samples of epithelium tissue. You ought to be very careful... We don't know what will trigger these aliens and what they are capable of.

Professor Morgan Parser:
The professor smiles when he recognizes you.
Noticiero: Gathering tissue... not the easiest of jobs.
Professor Morgan Parser: Did you manage to find all samples? Give me the mixer, please...
Professor Morgan Parser: Excellent! Now I need to convert the analysis into a class compatible with the detector in use...The FIA method is seven times more sensitive then any OLEK method, and its design is significantly less complex--
Noticiero: (Listen to the professor)
Professor Morgan Parser: While you were away I took a look at the ruins... They're so magnificent! You were right. I wonder what kind of archaic secrets they preserve. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to learn whether any of them were safe enough to enter, my escort was too concerned for our safety.
He intensively swears real bad over the aliens for a while before you can interrupt him.
Noticiero: What do you think the aliens are doing here?
Professor Morgan Parser: We've been working on a complete map of the Xan genealogical history for years, but it's been proven impossible until recent discoveries.
He lowers his voice a bit.
Professor Morgan Parser: Arid Rift seems to be operating as a RK base for the Kyr'Ozch. The high frequency of aliens is ardently trying to make us leave, just like they care about the Xan civilization...
An entirely new discovery that spurs an investigation of whether the Kyr'Ozch are descendants of the Xan!

A mystery unveiling...
He adjusts the tone of his voice to a more normal level of speech.
Professor Morgan Parser: I advice you to keep this information to yourself for now, Noticiero.
Noticiero: This is really groundbreaking news. I want to know more!
He shakes his head slowly.
Professor Morgan Parser: No, there will come a time for that, but I've already said too much. The best thing you can do now is to wait. I need to get back to work.
You believe it's possible to convince this man to tell you more, but you don't know what to say to make him listen.
Noticiero: I suggest you tell me more about this investigation!
Professor Morgan Parser: Stop wasting my time and get out of here! I'm busy.
Perhaps his colleague will give you additional information.

Professor Raji Masoud:
Raji Masoud's face is considered pale, even for a nanomage. Paleness typical for the kind of researcher that spends his whole life in a laboratory. The professor looks up, his eyes moving over your body as he tries to extract your appearance from his memory. He most definitely has internal bio-access NCU implants, much slower then the grander but much less reliable external deck equipped ones.
Noticiero: Hello, I'm Noticiero.
Professor Raji Masoud: Yes, hi... hello?
Noticiero: Can you tell me more about the traces of the Xan here on Rubi-Ka?
Professor Raji Masoud: A colleague of mine... An archaeologist, is stationed out in the field. I... myself, am still waiting for confirmation from him. He really should have been back by now.
I can't really tell you much until I've confirmed this from his reports.
Noticiero: Would you like me to get in touch with him for you?
Professor Raji Masoud: I'm... I'm not sure. It's not recommended to travel these rifts without Unicorn escort...
Noticiero: Don't worry, I'll find him if you point me in a general direction.
Professor Raji Masoud: His name is Dr. Torgrim Ness. He's stationed in the south west area... Digging for artifacts.
If you manage to find him... Tell him I sent you. His reports are of utter most importance.

And... Be careful!
He looks, if possible, even paler than before.

Dr. Ness uses a small set of tools to brush in the soil. You can see a few rocks lying beside the archaeologist and another one almost visible from under his hands.
Dr. Torgrim Ness: Ah, great timing! I'm getting hungry...
Noticiero: But... that's not why I came.
Dr. Torgrim Ness: Of course that wasn't why you came... You made more noise than a heavy mech in a glass house. The suppliers carry too much respect for their lives to willingly attract the alien's interest.
He continues to slowly brush the soil from something that looks like a cobble stone.
Noticiero: Wouldn't it take an awfully long time to find the hidden artifacts just by doing what you're doing?
He uses his brush in silence for a while
Dr. Torgrim Ness: ... ... Finding them is not the problem... I use highly advanced scanning equipment. The main problem is to pick up and file these items without altering their quality. So tell me... why'd you come?
Noticiero: Professor Masoud sent me. He's eager to read your reports.
Dr. Torgrim Ness: I'm not quite done yet. There are still a few ruins I haven't yet been to. It'll take about a day to finish up here... or two. This piece is really delicate.
Grab a seat while you wait.
You didn't happen to bring anything to eat, did you?
Noticiero: That's insane! I can't wait here for two days...
Dr. Torgrim Ness: Right-o. You in a hurry somewhere kid? Suppose you can go there and find artifacts for me. Should be an easy piece of pie.
Noticiero: I'll go. Where is it?
Dr. Torgrim Ness: I'll upload the coordinates of the main ruins into your NCU. Search the vicinity, and bring back three different artifacts. Then I should be able to finish the report professor Masoud requested.

The archeologist appears to be working on the same spot as before.
Noticiero: I found three ancient looking pieces.
Dr. Torgrim Ness: Toss them over won't you? No, no, be careful of course!
Dr. Ness turns the objects around in his hand before he puts them in small sealed containers.
Dr. Torgrim Ness: Not bad, kiddo! This signet ring here is clearly outfitted with some kind of ancient symbol... I believe I've seen something similar before in the Shadowlands... The ostracon and the arrowhead make me wonder whether they were that different from us... So these must be from the Xan post-cataclysm era, I'm so excited!
He finish his report and gives it back to you.
Dr. Torgrim Ness:
Tell Masoud I said hi.

Professor Raji Masoud: Hello... Noticiero.
Noticiero: I found Dr. Ness. Here's the report you needed.
Professor Raji Masoud: Ah, excellent! Please... give it to me!
The professor browses through the pages, repeating some of the content.
Professor Raji Masoud: Sightings of ruins... clearly built... civilization... surprisingly well preserved... ancient Xan artifacts... primitive... high frequency of Kyr'Ozch specimens--
Noticiero: Enough already! I'm not even remotely interested of learning this.
Professor Raji Masoud: Eh, okay... ... I guess I should thank you, Noticiero! Your work here has meant a great deal for our research...

I spoke to Professor Parser earlier and he told me about your effort. If you happen to be in the area... don't be a stranger.

I PICKED THE WRONG OPTION, BLEH!

Professor Morgan Parser: Welcome to Arid Rift! I can't recall to have ever met you before... I suppose you are the new demographer. I'm Morgan Parser, anthropologist. Have you been treated to the mandatory tour yet?
Noticiero: Professor, I have been helping professor Masoud... He feels like he is close to a breakthrough regarding the connection you have been telling me about.
Professor Morgan Parser: Oh--really! Raji Masoud is if truth be told an extremely intelligent man, but he is not exactly a people person. Did you actually get him to talk? I'm surprised... daunted in fact. I'd love to tell you more, but I'm afraid I don't have much time... Say...If you do me a little favor I can spare a few minutes. Would you mind?
Noticiero: Not at all, just tell me what to do.
Professor Morgan Parser: Excellent! I have a couple of supplies for our archeologist that needs to be delivered today... I also need some things brought back from him. He's stationed out in the field doing archeological work, but I'm not sure where--
Noticiero: I have met him before, Dr. Torgrim Ness.
The professor raises an eyebrow.
Professor Morgan Parser: Oh--really... You're just full of surprises aren't you?
Very well! Deliver this bag to him and be sure to ask him for some samples of his work in return.
